Broadnook Garden Suburb

Location: North of Birstall
Client: Palmer-Tomkinson Trust and Cooper Family
Sector: Assess Shape
Scope: Communities

Broadnook Garden Suburb is a genuine new Garden Community that has been shaped by consultation and focused on delivering quality. Define led the preparation of the project vision, and acted as design advocate guiding the project through the complex path post allocation to planning permission. The commitment to quality involved working with local housebuilders for the first phases, including Architect briefing and analysis of emerging detailed design to deliver a hybrid planning application for 1950 homes, a mixed use centre, and 15 hectares of employment land.

Define led the promotion of the scheme through a Design Review process and was instrumental in configuring the masterplan to ensure a positive response to its landscape context, whilst establishing an approach diversity of character and function for the Garden Suburb and navigating a progressive (cycle and pedestrian focused) street network through the adoption process. This role included establishing a Stewardship Strategy and liaising with an original Garden City provider to ensure this strategy was realistic and deliverable.
