This substantial extension to an existing historic settlement presented a clear opportunity for Define to formulate a vision and development framework for a true 21st Century neighbourhood that would embrace future living trends and drive behavioural change. The approach taken has placed health and wellbeing at its heart using a dense connected network of green infrastructure accommodating areas for play, sports, relaxation and biodiversity gain as the skeleton for development to sit within to ensure that all residents would have access to a healthy lifestyle. ‘Realtime’ visibility assessment of development forms in the landscape (using Augmented Reality) enabled a detailed understanding of how development could assimilate into the landscape, and where built form should, and should not, be located. Active travel and public transport movement was accommodated within that network to invoke multifunctionality to public space and outwardly promote movement by means other than the private car. The approach to built form is unashamedly contemporary in its approach, addressing future needs, provide a mix of housing for all generations as well as civic facilities that would underpin the new neighbourhood.
