Define has worked with BAM Construction Ltd since 2012, resulting in the successful completion of numerous specialist University Technical Colleges (UTCs), secondary and sixth form schools, primary schools, and dedicated SEN schools across the Midlands. In 2020, this has included the successful negotiation of three secondary schools in Leicester and Derby, and the redevelopment of an existing primary school in Birmingham, all of which are currently under construction.
Specialist UTCs include WMG Academy for Young Engineers in Solihull, funded through the Education Funding Agency Regional Framework. Define was commissioned to provide planning consultancy services to prepare, submit and negotiate a full planning application for the Academy building and associated external recreation and parking areas. The site was located in a physically and environmentally constrained urban area, comprising an area of green space with public rights of way, close to existing residential areas, Kingsland Brook and the River Cole, and neighbouring Chelmsley Wood Local Nature Reserve.
The development sought to regenerate part of the North Solihull Regeneration Area through the enhancement of educational facilities. The new 2 storey Academy building was designed by Maber Architects and provides a learning facility that focuses on a broad base of engineering with science, with specialist learning in subjects allied to local employers in the automotive, aerospace and high value engineering sectors.
