Introduction

We were asked to look how we could carve a new western entrance through the chalk cliffs into the Ashmere Site in Ebbsfleet Garden City. Our response was to create a series of cascading terraces that would give us the opportunity to restore the natural habitat whilst creating a visually striking sculptural landscape. The ‘Striations’ were designed to reflect a landscape carved out of stone being reclaimed by nature.

We created a series of test panels for the wall which would give the client, local authority and adjacent developer Countryside the opportunity to review before we constructed the project. The Kentish Ragstone was sourced from a local quarry and in keeping with the local vernacular.

Our planting scheme consisted of large swathes of UK native wildflowers and tree planting; reminiscent of the natural landscape that once existed here.
